The poem â€Å"A City’s Death by Fire† by Derek Walcott is a semi-autobiographical poem, a recollection of the Great Fire of 1948 in Central Castries (the capital and largest city of St. Lucia). The Great Fire attacked three quarters of the town and left more than 2,000 people homeless. This cataclysmic event affected Walcott’s life, because he was born in Central Castries. Walcott first describes the situation of the city with helplessness and despair, but then realizes that one should not lose faith after the physical world has failed to survive. Through this poem, Walcott conveys his theme that faith should not be help in the man-made world, but rather be held in the immunity of nature through the use of figurative language, diction, and imagery, and juxtaposition. Throughout the poem, Walcott utilizes figurative language in order to reflect the despair and demolition caused by the Great Fire of 1948. The speaker talks about the â€Å"faiths that were snapped like a wire† as he felt betrayed by the false immunity that he thought existed in the city buildings. This simile expresses that abrupt loss of hope that Walcott had felt from the fire. He also mentions the situation under which the poem was written â€Å"under a candles eye that smoked in tears†. Although this provides an understanding of what was literally left from the fire, the expression that the candle’s eye smoked in tears also reflects the sorrow and despair felt by the residents. The amount of havoc from the fire is encapsulated in the title itself: â€Å"A City’s Death by Fire†. The city is personified as it is said to have the ability to die. Although a city, a non living organism, cannot literally die, the personification represents what is li terally and emotionally left of the town. The city is emotionally dead due to the great amount of hope that was lost from everyone after the fire. Because all the faith was lost within the residents, there is a loss of life in the city. Walcott then develops the idea of physical death of the city by describing the physical destruction caused by the fire. During his recollection of walking through the havoc, he vividly describes the â€Å"levelled† buildings, â€Å"rubbled† ground, and â€Å"torn† houses that were left destroyed from the fire. His rich use of concrete diction effectively portrays the dark and sorrowful image of the city. His diction to describe the city reveals the severity of the amount of demolition that the fire had left the residents. In addition to describing the emotional effects of the fire through literary devices and the literal demolition through diction, Walcott also communicates the fire’s lack of impact on nature through his extensive use of imagery. He begins the poem by referring to the fire storm as the â€Å"hot gospeller†. This metaphorical comparison suggests that the fire spread as quick as a preacher would spread the gospel. The fire spread quick and destroyed the â€Å"wooden world†, but it left the â€Å"churched sky† without a harm. This suggests that the sky was like the untouchable church and was not affected by the fire. Religious imagery continues to pervade the poem as the hills are compared to â€Å"flocks of faith†. This comparison suggests that the hills are also left untouched by the fire just as the sky was. The religious imagery throughout the poem suggests that the fire was almost a biblical catastrophe, but also relaying an apparent message about a sense of faith echoing in the perseverance of nature. Throughout the poem, Walcott highlights the juxtaposition between the perseverance of the natural world and the destruction of the â€Å"wooden† man-made world. He does this by creating a sharp contrast between the immune natural world and the destroyed man-made world. The man-made world is described with a pessimistic tone when he describes the sorrowful destruction from the fire through his use of concrete diction and figurative language. Walcott loses his trust in the man-made world due to how unreliable the buildings were during the firestorm. This is evident when he expresses that he is â€Å"shocked at each wall that stood on the street like a liar†. The simile compares the walls to liars as they have failed to stand strong like the speaker thought it would, therefore, expressing his loss of trust. On the other hand, the natural world is described with an encouraged tone when he speaks about the preserved nature through his religious imagery. The religious implica tions to the sky and the hills introduces the speaker’s realization of the renewal of his faith. The juxtaposition exposes the realization that the speaker has. He expresses through the juxtaposition that he mistakenly lost faith after the man-made world was destroyed. Moreover, when he notices the perseverance of the hills and sky, he realizes that he should not lose faith due to the destroyed city, because the preservation of nature even after the fire symbolized the â€Å"baptism by fire†. The fire was no longer seen as destroying the city, but rather purging the city. The fire purified and renewed the city, just as a Christian baptism symbolises. It removed the vulnerable and fraudulent man-made world and created hope for the rebirth of the city. The fire markes a new beginning of a new founded faith that is not based on the man-made things, but the nature that was preserved. The semi-autobiographical poem reflects Walcott’s life after the Great Fire of 1948. It reflects how Walcott has lost faith from the fire’s destruction, but then was restored. He expresses his initial feeling of true sorrow and hopelessness through his rich use of figurative language, and uses his concrete diction to express the severity of the death of the city. However, there is a shift in the poem, where the speaker shifts from talking about the destruction of the city to renewal of a pure city. He shifts from hopelessness to faith being restored, because he realizes that the fire just markes a new beginning of a new-found faith.

College Morris attended Marlborough and Exeter colleges, where he met painter Edward Burne-Jones and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti, forming a group known as the Brotherhood, or the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. They shared a love of poetry, the Middle Ages, and Gothic architecture, and they read the works of philosopher John Ruskin. They also developed an interest in the Gothic Revival architectural style. This wasnt entirely an academic or social brotherhood; they were inspired by Ruskins writings. The Industrial Revolution that began in Britain had turned the country into something unrecognizable to the young men. Ruskin wrote about societys ills in books such as The Seven Lamps of Architecture and The Stones of Venice. The group discussed Ruskins themes about the impacts of industrialization: how machines dehumanize, how industrialization ruins the environment, and how mass production creates shoddy, unnatural objects. The group believed that the artistry and honesty in handcrafted materials were missing in British machine-made goods. They longed for an earlier time. Morris commissioned Philip Webb, an architect he had met in Street’s office, to build a home for him and his wife. It was called the  Red House because it was to be built of red brick instead of the more fashionable stucco. They lived there from 1860 to 1865. The house, a grand yet simple structure, exemplified the Arts and Crafts philosophy inside and out, with craftsman-like workmanship and traditional, unornamented design. Other notable interiors by Morris include the 1866 Armoury and Tapestry Room at St. James Palace and the 1867 Green Dining Room at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The group of like-minded artists and craftsmen responding to the shoddy practices of Victorian manufacturing became highly fashionable and much in demand, profoundly influencing interior decoration throughout the Victorian period. At the International Exhibition of 1862, the group exhibited stained glass, furniture, and embroideries, leading to commissions to decorate several new churches. The pinnacle  of the firm’s decorative work was a series of stained-glass windows designed by Burne-Jones for Jesus College Chapel, Cambridge, with the ceiling painted by Morris and Webb. Morris designed many other windows, for domestic and  ecclesiastical  use, as well as tapestries, wallpaper, fabrics, and furniture. Other Pursuits He hadnt given up on poetry. Morris first fame as a poet came with the romantic narrative  The Life and Death of Jason  (1867), followed by  The Earthly Paradise  (1868-1870), a series of narrative poems based on classical and medieval sources. In 1875, Morris assumed total control of the fine art workmen company, which was renamed Morris Co. It remained in business until 1940, its longevity a testament to the success of Morris’ designs. By 1877, Morris and Webb had also established the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), a historic preservation organization. Morris explained its purposes in the SPAB Manifesto: to put Protection in the place of Restoration...to treat our ancient buildings as monuments of a bygone art. One of the most exquisite tapestries produced by Morris company was The Woodpecker, designed entirely by Morris. The tapestry, woven by William Knight and William Sleath, was shown at the Arts and Crafts Society Exhibition in 1888. Other patterns by Morris include Tulip and Willow Pattern, 1873, and Acanthus Pattern, 1879–81. Later in his life, Morris poured his energies into political writing. He was initially against the aggressive foreign policy of Conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, supporting Liberal Party leader William Gladstone. However, Morris became disillusioned after the 1880 election. He began writing for the Socialist Party and participated in socialist demonstrations. Death Morris and his wife were happiest together during the first 10 years of their marriage, but since a divorce was inconceivable at the time, they lived together until his death. Exhausted by his many activities, Morris bean to feel his energy waning. A voyage to Norway in the summer of 1896 failed to revive him, and he died shortly after returning home, in Hammersmith, England, on Oct. 3, 1896. He was buried under a simple gravestone designed by Webb. Legacy Morris is now regarded as a modern visionary thinker, though he turned from what he called â€Å"the dull squalor of civilization† to historical romance,  myth, and epic. Following Ruskin, Morris defined beauty in art as the result of man’s pleasure in his work. To Morris, art included the whole man-made  environment. In his own time he  was best known as the author of  The Earthly Paradise  and for his designs for wallpapers, textiles, and carpets. Since the mid-20th century, Morris has been celebrated as a designer and craftsman. Future generations may esteem him more as a social and moral critic, a pioneer of the society of equality. Prescription Drug User Act ( Pdufa ) - 844 Words

Before getting marketing approval for any drug in United States it has to pass through FDA review process. Under prescription Drug User Act (PDUFA) came in effect in 1992, FDA has set up specific goals to improve drug review process time and created two tiered system of review times. The standard review and The Priority Review. A drug can get priority Review designation if offer major advances in treatment, or provide a treatment where no adequate therapy exists. A priority Review means that the time it takes FDA to review a New Drug application (NDA) is reduced. The goal for completing priority review is six months whereas Standard review process takes ten months. The priority review status can apply both to drugs that are used to treat serious disease and drugs for less serious illness. The FDA is giving additional attention and resources towards the drug approval process which have potential significant advances in a treatment. In the period 1999–2011, 100 FDA-priority review pharmaceuticals were approved by both the FDA and the EMA. The majority of the products were ï ¬ rst submitted to and approved by the FDA. Considering Children Of Illegal Immigrants by Frosty...

In one of her editorials, Frosty Wooldridge has written about how undocumented immigrants cost taxpayers colossal sum of money annually. Wooldridge holds that these undocumented immigrants give rise to offspring who become deeply bounded or rooted to this country and they in turn cost taxpayers a huge sum of money annually. Wooldridge’s editorial is one of the controversial discussions both at the congress level and the country at large. This argument is one of those that thwart or impede the implementation of the DREAM Act which is to help the children of undocumented immigrants to enjoy some privileges such as obtaining in-state tuition and others. Wooldridge thinks that the rate at which these undocumented immigrants are having†¦show more content†¦In doing so she concludes that all these undocumented immigrants must be send to their various countries at once. She also makes assumptions that congress watch and do nothing about the situation she believes is on the rise. I agree with Wooldridge in saying that the rooted children of these undocumented immigrants will rise up one day and take over our country because of their number. She has a point, because why should we watch unconcerned for aliens who are seeking refuge and good lives in our country give birth uncontrollably to outnumber us? What are the ramifications? Won’t they all rise up against us one day? Maybe YES, maybe NO. If yes, then I support Wooldridge that Americans must do something before is too late to protect its own but not in a sense of sending all of them away at once. Wooldridge generalizes that all the undocumented immigrants are unemployed and their children cost taxpayers a lot of money every year. I strongly disagree to that because, a recent estimate by researchers at the Pew Hispanic Center puts the number of illegal aliens in the work force at a number of 8 million out of an overall population of 11.2 million illegal aliens, that is 74 percent. This implies that majority of these â€Å"illegal immigrants† or aliens are employed at the various sectors of the US economy as opposed to what Wooldridge insinuated.
