Dissociative Identity Disorder Defining what is abnormal is not necessarily easy. There are many different criteria to determine what exactly is normal and what is abnormal. According to Ciccarelli and White (2012) as early as 3000 B.C.E. there have been human skulls found with holes in them. Archaeologists suspect this was caused because of the treatments they had years ago such as â€Å"trepanning†. Trepanning is done nowadays as well to remove extra fluids from the brain, as for years ago doctors did it to release the supposed â€Å"demons† taking over a person’s body and mind (Ciccarelli White, 2012, p.553). This was due to technology not being as updated as today, many disorders were seen as witchcraft, and/or demons possessions. A way psychology and science have developed a term on what is considered to be normal and not normal is due to observing occurring behavior. Another way is to see an act that is not seen as part of society’s standards, also known as against the norms. There are many known disorders, one being Dissociative Disorders to be exact. Dissociative disorders â€Å"involve a break, or dissociation, in consciousness, memory, or a person’s sense of identity† (Ciccarelli White, 2012, p.553). It’s a â€Å"split† in your life that happens, like whenever someone goes to the kitchen to get something and then forgets what they were going to get.
